Transforming old asphalt into ‘green’ livable areas is one of the main strategies in the Small Learning Communities (SLC) projects for LAUSD. MSP has completed this type of projects at 7 high schools, and 9 more sites are in the design or bid phase.
By breaking large high schools into smaller academies, and by providing identity and more personal spaces for the students, LAUSD seeks to increase academic performance. The architect designs exterior and interior spaces that are comfortable, desirable, and even inspirational; some of the cost-effective exterior elements in these renovations include pavers, landscape, shade structures, signs, banners, kiosks, colors, logos and other graphic materials. The result is a series of personalized nodes unified by a carrying motif throughout the campus.
